Dear Senators,

As Republican Mayors representing cities across America, we urgently call on the Senate to immediately pass a clean short-term funding extension to prevent a government shutdown that would adversely impact hardworking Americans in our communities. With the funding deadline fast approaching, we implore the Senate to act swiftly on the clean extension that passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support.

A government shutdown is not just a partisan standoff in Washington, it has real and immediate consequences for our cities and towns. Local governments are on the frontlines when Washington fails. A shutdown could put public safety in cities at risk, directly impacting the police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and sanitation workers that keep our cities safe and running. It would jeopardize housing and healthcare programs, delay funding for infrastructure projects, and threaten services that families, seniors, and veterans in our communities rely on every single day.

These are not bargaining chips as many Senators would like you to believe. These are vital necessities that allow our cities to thrive; and holding first responders, hardworking families, and Main Street businesses hostage just to score political points is not the answer.

There is a straightforward solution on the table that Senators should support, one they voted for just six months ago. A clean funding extension provides stability for our service members and veterans, continuity for families who depend on low-income assistance programs, and certainty for local governments working to grow our economies and keep our residents safe. Allowing a shutdown would needlessly disrupt city budgets, threaten public safety, and erode public trust.

Republican Mayors believe that government should be limited, efficient, and fiscally responsible. A shutdown accomplishes none of those goals. It is not a sustainable or responsible way to govern. The American people understand that, and they expect their leaders, at every level, to put citizens ahead of politics. That’s why we are calling on Senators to act in the best interest of our country by keeping the government open.

We urge you to pass a clean funding extension without delay. Our cities and our taxpayers are counting on you to demonstrate leadership and put governance over politicking.

Sincerely,

Eric Johnson
